You are invited to participate in a research study conducted by Bob G. Knight, Ph.D. from the Davis School of Gerontology and the Department of Psychology at the University of Southern California. A total of 3000 will invited to participate. Your participation is voluntary. Please read the information below, and ask questions about anything you do not understand, before deciding whether or not to participate.
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
We are asking you to take part in this research study because we are trying to learn more about wisdom and how to measure wisdom in older adults.
Completion of the questionnaires will constitute consent to participate in this research project.
If you volunteer to participate in this study, we ask you to do the following things:
You will be asked to complete some questionnaires that will give us general background information on yourself (gender, age, health status, and so forth), aspects of your emotions and your ways of responding to life events. This is expected to take about 60 minutes.
POTENTIAL RISKS AND DISCOMFORTS
We believe that risks and discomforts from participating in the study are minimal. You may become somewhat tired or bored during the study.
POTENTIAL BENEFITS TO SUBJECTS AND/OR TO SOCIETY
Although some people enjoy the study, you are not expected to benefit directly from participation. We believe that the results of the study will help us understand wisdom and will help us to develop a measure to assess wisdom. Eventually, this can lead to a better understanding of positive aspects of aging and to the development of an effective class to help people develop wisdom.
PAYMENT/COMPENSATION FOR PARTICIPATION
You will not be paid for participating in this research study. As a token of our appreciation for your participation, you will have the opportunity of entering a drawing for a $100 gift certificate at Amazon.com that is open only to participants in this research project.
There will be no information obtained in connection with this study that can be identified with you. Your name, address or other information that may identify you will not be collected during this research study. Thus, your participation is anonymous, and there will be no way to link these data files back to you.
The data will be stored in the investigator’s office in a password protected computer. These files will be kept indefinitely by Dr. Knight and may be used in future research studies. If you do not want your data used in future studies, you should not participate in this study.
The members of the research team and the University of Southern California’s Human Subjects Protection Program (HSPP) may access the data. The HSPP reviews and monitors research studies to protect the rights and welfare of research subjects. Under some circumstances, the computer data set may be shared with other researchers working on similar topics. Again, these data are anonymous and could not be linked to you.
PARTICIPATION AND WITHDRAWAL
You can choose whether to be in this study or not. If you volunteer to be in this study, you may withdraw at any time without consequences of any kind. You may also refuse to answer any questions you don’t want to answer and still remain in the study.
RIGHTS OF RESEARCH SUBJECTS
You may withdraw your consent at any time and discontinue participation without penalty. You are not waiving any legal claims, rights or remedies because of your participation in this research study. If you have questions regarding your rights as a research subject, contact the University Park Institutional Review Board (UPIRB), 3720 Flower Street # 301, Los Angeles, CA 90089-0702, (213) 821-5272 or email@example.com.
